Wise and sustainable seafood decisions
Long Beach Lodge Resort's Ocean Wise™ offers wonderful culinary treasuresOverfishing is the biggest threat to our oceans. With mechanization, technology and industrialization, mans’ ability to harvest seafood has grown exponentially.
Varieties of rockfish, salmon, sea bass, sturgeons and sawfish are but a few of dozens of threatened stocks.
Aquariums, fisheries, conservation groups and restaurants have taken lead to protect and save these and other stocks. In B.C., the charge is being lead by the Vancouver Aquarium which has provided “Ocean Wise™” certification to make it easier for consumers to make sustainable seafood choices that ensure the health of our oceans for generations to come.
The Vancouver Aquarium’s Ocean Wise™ program works directly with restaurants, markets, foodservices and suppliers to ensure they have the most current scientific information regarding sustainable seafood and to help them make ocean-friendly buying decisions. The options are highlighted on menus and display cases with the Ocean Wise symbol, making it easier for consumers to make ocean-friendly seafood choices.
Long Beach Lodge Resort is a proud backer and participant in this crucial program. Resort chef Ian Riddick pays careful attention to fish and seafood suppliers and supplies and is always seeking out and purchasing sustainable stocks.
Along with his network of preferred suppliers, Chef Riddick has many resources at his disposal when it comes to making fish and seafood purchasing decisions. Ocean Wise™ is one of 18 organizations from North America which form part of the Conservation Alliance for Seafood Solutions. The Conservation Alliance connects seafood expertise to businesses with the goal of seafood sustainability.
To celebrate and promote the Ocean Wise™ program and fisheries conservation, the Resort is excited to present the 2016 Ocean Wise™ Dinner. On March 19, Dan Hayes, chef and owner of Victoria’s London Chef, will be joining chef Riddick in Tofino to present a marvellous menu of Ocean Wise™ fare. Features will include: outlandish oysters; organic ocean smoked sockeye salmon; sablefish; albacore tuna; Dungeness crab.
Ocean Wise™ does not mean cheap or poor quality seafood. Most varieties of the best and most sought-after seafood and shellfish remain sustainable and available.
Chefs Riddick and Hayes menus serve notice that when properly managed and protected, the oceans and their wonderful culinary treasures can be sustained for many generations.
