Water conservation paramount at Long Beach Lodge Resort

Long Beach Lodge Resort endorses and engages in proactive water conservation.

Tofino, like the rest of British Columbia, is faced with the on-going prospect of declining rainfall and warmer temperatures. This is especially pertinent in Tofino where we look to the skies for most of our water as our water supply comes almost exclusively from a rain, creek and river-replenished reservoir.

While the lush, beautiful rainforests and landscape in Tofino and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve suggest otherwise, freshwater is a finite resource which we at Long Beach Lodge Resort work hard to preserve through Resort-initiated activities and monitoring and by observing all district water-conservation directives.

Conservation Starts at Home
Visitors to Long Beach Lodge Resort are encouraged to reuse towels and bed linens through the Resort-initiated "Every Drop of Water Counts" campaign. Guests are learning that there are many subtle changes such as these that are not very impactful on the quality of their visit but can make a big difference on the environment. Ultimately, the hope is that our awareness campaigns and water conservation tips are used by visitors when they return home.

Proactive Public Efforts
The beautiful clear blue skies and remarkably warm weather we have enjoyed during this summer of 2015 prompted Tofino’s district office to initiate Stage 1 water restrictions on June 3. A proactive measure, restrictions mean area residents with even-numbered addresses may only water their lawns and gardens on Tuesdays and Fridays and residents while odd-numbered addresses may only do their watering on Mondays and Thursdays.

On July 9, 2015, Stage 2 water restrictions came into effect. Under stage 2, all outdoor water use is prohibited; there is to be no outdoor watering (except by hand, for food gardens on specified times and days); potable water is not to be used for outdoor washing of any article or vehicle; and hot tubs or pools are not to be filled nor topped up.

Being Prepared and Responsible
The Resort recognizes and endorses efforts and innovations that ensure there is enough water throughout the year. The Long Beach Lodge Resort Sustainability Committee includes representatives from every department at the Resort. The Committee meets every month to discuss Resort’s water conservation activities and progress and debate new management ideas and activities, such as capturing rainwater and grey water in holding tanks for use in toilets and laundry facilities. Innovations such as this allow incremental savings that can add up to big benefits for the environment, residents and visitors to Tofino and Pacific Rim National Park Reserve.

As well, we encourage visitors and residents alike to participate in the district’s 20% challenge which encourages everyone to reduce their water consumption by 20% compared to the previous summer.

"One of the best “experience” hotels we’ve stayed in"

We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a 14 day road-trip from Ireland and all I can say is that it was absolutely amazing. The staff were all so welcoming, friendly and attentive. We stayed in room 313 which was on the top floor overlooking the beach with a balcony. Truth be told, the hotel was so good we didn’t venture far over the 3 days, instead opting to just “relax” at the hotel walking the beach or sitting outside at the gas fires taking in the ambience and the surfers catching the waves. The food and service in the restaurant was amazing, I would even go so far to say it was the best food we’ve had in a long time at a hotel! If having food at the hotel, make sure you book a table at the restaurant before 6pm and maybe even arrive a little early. They will not reserve the window seats, but to get the best view of the sunset over the pacific - trust me, it’s where you want to be sitting. Cocktails were also very good. If getting a snack during the day you can get it at the Surf Club which is a few steps from the main building. After dinner we just retired to the bedroom with the gas fires going, patio doors open and enjoying a bottle of wine while listening to the waves crash on the beach. We didn’t do breakfast at the hotel any of the mornings as we wanted something “light” opting instead for the delights from the cafe & bakery Tofitian just a few minutes up the road. As an “experience”, it was hands down one of the best hotels I’ve visited in Canada/US. The team should be very proud.

Excellent stay. Room was awesome. Dealt with power outage while in town, staff was great with the whole situation. Only thing I would write is that lighting in great room/dining room/bar could be more welcoming/better in my humble belief. Asked to come in for a drink and sat next to the water (which was great), but would be cool if bar was less staff-oriented and more open to sitting.
